Our team of specialists has expertise evaluating and treating a variety of feeding and swallowing problems. During the initial visit, a speech-language pathologist will evaluate the strength and movement of the muscles involved in swallowing. Posture, behavior and oral movement will also be observed during eating and drinking (bottle and cup). Additional tests may be recommended to further evaluate swallowing function, such as a modified barium swallow.
Treating Feeding and Swallowing Disorders
Treatment for feeding and swallowing problems varies greatly, depending on the cause of the swallowing problems. Treatment may include:
- Diet modification
- Exercises to increase strength, sensation and coordination
- Neuromuscular electrical stimulation to increase the strength of facial muscles
- Ongoing education in using special equipment or techniques
- Sensory processing to decrease feeding aversions
- VitalStim® therapy (electrical stimulation therapy to maximize swallowing, speech and/or vocal function)
