Children at play sometimes spin around in circles until they feel too dizzy to stand. Adults may feel that same sensation as the result of an accident, a disease or seemingly without cause.
Patients experiencing dizziness, lightheadedness, nausea, vomiting, spinning, unsteadiness and/or balance problems may benefit from physical therapy focused on balance and the vestibular system at Memorial Rehabilitation Center.
Some common diagnoses that may require balance and vestibular rehabilitation include:
- Acoustic neuroma
- Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
- Central disorders as a result of a head injury (fall, accident, stroke, etc.)
- Labyrinthitis
- Meniere's disease
- Vestibular neuritis
The Program
Our physical therapists assess the vestibular system to determine the treatment for each patient's specific needs. Vestibular rehabilitation may include exercises with various head, body and eye movements, as well as general balance activities. If appropriate, it may be necessary to provide strengthening, flexibility, coordination and gait (walking) training.

"As a photographer, I need to stand for long periods, bending and squatting with my equipment," John says. "I wondered how somebody was going to help me do that with an artificial leg."
